Athena

The Greek goddess Athena (spelled in Greek as Ἀθηνᾶ and Ἀσάνα, in the manga and the anime adaptation respectively, and occasionally as Ἀθάνα in both) is the goddess of wisdom and heroic endeavor, and daughter of Zeus. In Kurumada's mythos, she is sent to Earth by the Olympian gods every 250 years, when evil takes over Earth. Her mission during every one of her incarnations is to restore peace and bring hope, destroy the agent of evil and protect Earth; to do so, she has been assisted since the ages of myth by an army of 88 youths of great strength and courage, whose fists rend the skies and whose kicks split the earth, don radiant holy armor called Cloths, and are known as the Saints of Athena. Athena is said to be by birthright the goddess of battle, but she didn't believe in conquest and only fought defensive wars. She hates weapons, and thus only allows her Saints to battle using their bodies and armors. The only Saint allowed by her to wield weapons is the Libra Gold Saint, and it is only with her permission that the Saints are allowed to brandish the weapons kept by the Libra Saint. She has opposed the ambitions of antagonist deities since the ages of myth in Greece, earning herself the rejection of the other Olympian gods. She has had specially a long-standing conflict with the god of the Underworld, Hades.

Since she is a deity, Athena has capabilities that surpass humans by far. She is a frail young woman untrained for battle, mostly unable to fight physically, but her Cosmo is immense, and surpasses human Cosmo infinitely. She is a being of total compassion and love, and she will stop at nothing to protect Earth, the world she cares about so much, and its living creatures.

Athena has great endurance to pain, unfailing courage and persistence and unbreakable willpower, greatly augmented by her full trust on her Saints. As Saori, she possesses a brilliant intellect, she's also a capable money handler and strategist, as she is the head of the Graad Foundation and has been ever since Mitsumasa Kido's death. In fact, before Saori came to know she was Athena, she had become a very successful and admired businesswoman in her own right.

Athena's attributes include Nike, the goddess of victory, represented as a golden staff she always holds in her right arm, and the Ægis shield, impervious to any kind of attack. Also, as a goddess, she is capable of donning her powerful Divine Cloth, which rests in the form of a giant statue in her image at Sanctuary until it is revived with her blood.

Athena has also exhibited great mastery of her Cosmo, as she is able to use it to generate abilities with various effects. She channels her Cosmo mostly through her body or through her Niké Staff. Both in manga and the anime adaptation, several techniques have been revealed: Healing auras (she's said to be the most powerful healer in the Saint Seiya universe, able to heal even lethal injuries if summoned just in time), defensive shields, teleportation (in the conclusion of the Poseidon arc and Hades arc), the Seal of Athena (used on both Hades and Poseidon to seal them away), and Misopethamenos, a divine gift bestowed upon Libra Dohko. Her Niké Staff can be used as a weapon when Cosmo is channeled through it, becoming a piercing weapon, in the same way she used it to kill Hades.

Athena also managed to awaken her Cosmo to the Eight Sense, thus being able to descend to the underworld without being subject to its laws.

Aries Mu

Aries Mu (牡羊座のムウ Ariesu no Mū?) is very soft spoken, with a scholarly-like personality; his demeanor is very tranquil and logical, almost as if he is a professor of the Sanctuary. Various official translations of the manga and anime, as well as Mandarin language Saint Seiya fans, tend to refer to the character as 'Lord Mu' or 'Mister Mu'. He is good friends with Taurus Aldebaran, and is very respectful to the 243 year old master Libra Dohko. Throughout the manga and anime series, Mu is the man to go to when a Saint needs his or her cloth repaired.

Although every individual Cloth has the ability to regenerate itself after a battle, a hands-on restoration from Mu is needed if a cloth has been severely damaged to the point of death. In normal cases, 1/3 of a person's total blood supply is required for Mu to begin work right away. When restoring an armor, Mu uses hardware tools and the elements that are used to forge a Cloth: the mythical and extremely rare metal known as Gammanium, used in an alloy with the legendary metal Orichalcum, and finally, the radiant Star Dust Sand.

While Mu is depicted as a pacifist throughout the first half of the series, he is an extremely capable and powerful fighter when the situation demands so. Not only is the Saint of Aries built with two offensive and one defensive attacks, he is also a master of various psychic techniques. From basic teleportation to advanced telekinesis, Mu is revered as a premiere psychic user among even those outside of Sainthood.

As Mu possesses extraordinary psychic and telekinetic abilities, he can manifest his mental prowess with the Glamour Illusion, a technique he has used only once to date, in vol. 5 of the manga, against the group of the Silver Saints Lizard Misty, Hound Asterion, Kaitos Mozes and Kentaur Babel. The Illusion tricks the opponent into thinking whatever Mu decides, make the opponent think white is black or glass is diamonds, as Cygnus Hyouga described it. Mu used it to trick the Silver Saints into thinking the Black Saints they killed were the Bronze Saints. However, an opponent with a strong mind or psychic power can be capable of seeing through the Glamour spun by Mu, as Lizard Misty was able to discover Eagle Marin's and Mu's deception after some time.

His defensive techniques are Crystal Wall (クリスタルウォール Kurisutaru Wōru?) which creates a transparent, glass-like barrier made of psycho-power, between Mu and an object. The wall is very durable, and has been shown to shield Mu against everything from normal cosmos attacks to poison scent and rebounding the attack back to the enemy with the same strength it was launched. The strength of the wall is dependent on Mu's cosmos level; at 100%, it is nearly unbreakable to almost all but Mu's mentor who taught him the technique, Aries Shion. A variation of this technique is Crystal Net (クリスタルネット Kurisutaru Neto?) that creates a psycho-power made spider web. This web can refrain the movements of the targets that get in contact with it.

Starlight Extinction (スターライトエクスティンクション Sutāraito Ekusutinkushion?) its a teleportation-based offensive technique. Although it essence rely not on destroying the opponent but on removing him from battle, by teleporting the opponent out of sight and out of the fight, when Mu used it against Pegasus Seiya, he was able to send the bronze saint to a location of his choosing. He also used this technique to send Cancer Deathmask and Pisces Aphrodite to Hades' earthly castle in Germany (it must be noted that he was trying to kill them by sending both to the "dead world"). In the fight against Papillon Myu, at the end of the battle when Papillon is entrapped by Crystal Net, Mu sent him out of existence, and thus successfully killed him. (The kill was confirmed by Virgo Shaka's 108 Rosary. The number of the black beads also includes Papillon's.) In Episode G, Starlight Extinction is also used to remove Dimension Iapetos' dimensional rifts.

One of Mu's most powerful attacks is Stardust Revolution (スターダストレボリューション Sutādasuto Reboryūshon?). Like Crystal Wall, it is an attack that was handed down by his mentor Aries Shion (The former Aries Gold Saint and the real Pope of Athena's Sanctuary in this modern era). The attack summons stardust from stars and galaxies then throws million of blows instantly. It's well known that the attack has force of shooting stars and comets and obliterates an enemy with raw cosmos power. In Episode G, Mu used this attack to destroy all the hundred arms of the Hechatonchire.

In addition to all of these techniques, Mu is also blessed with the speed of light that all Gold Saints possess due their mastering over the 7th sense. He can also teleport his own body or any object at will at anytime, even during the midst of battle. The will of Athena wakes Mu and the other eleven gold saints out of death state in order for them to batter down the Wailing Wall.

Taurus Aldebaran

Taurus Aldebaran (牡牛座のアルデバラン Taurasu no Arudebaran?) is one of the 12 Guardians of Sanctuary, with the Taurus as his destined constellation. He was the physically strongest of the Gold Saints of modern era. Unlike most of the characters, Aldebaran is often depicted as a friendly guy, laughing and being less serious in times of peace. He was a good friend of Aries Mu and with Pegasus Seiya (as this last is said in the anime adaptation of the Hades Saga, when Aldebaran sacrificed together with the other 11 Gold Saints to destroy the Wailing Wall).

In a flashback in the anime version of the Hades saga, he is shown to awkwardly accept the gift of a flower from an unnamed small girl, while Aiolia, Mu and other village girls from around the Sanctuary look on. Although Aldebaran followed the orders of the Pope, he was growing suspicious of his integrity and tested the Bronze saints during their invasion on the Sanctuary. According to Aries Mu, Aldebaran could have killed all of them if he used his true power, but Aldebaran answered that if his enemies were fighting so hard, then their beliefs couldn't be all wrong.

Having mastered the 7th sense, Aldebaran is able to fully control his Cosmo energy and make movements at the speed of light. This power allowed him to become one of the Gold Saints, the strongest class among the protectors of the goddess Athena. It is hinted that he achieved the 8th sense in the Hades saga, so he could freely fight in the Hades and aid the other Gold Saints. Aldebaran has displayed superhuman physical strength in Saint Seiya Episode G, being able to lift single armed a plate that was crushing two other Gold Saints. Between his techniques, he has only showed the Great Horn (グレートホーン gurēto hōn?) in which Aldebaran sends two waves of massive Cosmo energy toward his enemy. The offensive power of this technique is high enough to pulverize a warrior completely together with his armor.
In order to improve the power and strength of his Great Horn, Aldebaran keeps his crossed-arm posture throughout the series. As noted by Pegasus Seiya this is a strategy similar to iaijutsu: While in this posture, Aldebaran can instantly react to incoming attacks and counter attack them, so quickly that the enemy is unable to perceive the attack before Aldebaran crosses his arms again.
Aldebaran has also shown the ability to create minor illusions like he did on his fight against Siren Sorento.

Gemini Saga

Gemini Saga (双子座のサガ Jemini no Saga?) served as the main antagonist for the Sanctuary arc. Being an excellent strategist, Saga managed to put himself in control of the sanctuary (though unfairly) for many years. Before the final showdown between himself and Pegasus Seiya, Saga was portrayed as a mysterious being with his facial features hidden from view. Saga is often described by other characters as someone with the kindness of an angel but with the darkness of a demon. This ambivalence ended up creating a split personality: a good Saga that was extremely loyal to Athena and an evil one that keep the control of the body most of the time and killed the previous Pope to steal his place.

Sometimes it is hinted that the creation of his "bad" personality had the influence of some external force, although nothing was clearly stated. When it takes the control of Saga's body, his hair turn from blond to jet-black (the color schemes were altered for the anime, in which Saga's normally blue hair turned light grey). Saga's two "sides", can also communicate between them : in a dialogue the good Saga reproaches his evil "side" to have forced him to hurt Athena.

As one of the twelve Gold Saints, Saga was greatly skilled in all aspects of combat. He possesses light-speed attacks and strong mental-psychic powers, which allow him to create vivid illusions and distort time and space(Another Dimension). He is able to do this at great distances after mentally locating the opponents exact position. As an example of his great power, Saga was able to deprive Pegasus Seiya of his five senses using Cosmo energy blasts from his fists. In the anime, he is also able to deflect a triple attack from three Bronze Saints who acquired the 7th sense (although it's hinted that they hadn't mastered the 7th sense, so they're weaker than a Gold Saint), with minimal effort.

Many consider Saga to be one of the most powerful of all Gold Saints, including Virgo Shaka.

Another Dimension (アナザーディメンション Anazā Dimenshon?) Allows him to bend space and time itself provoking a rift or a passageway to a different dimension, intending to push and trap his opponents inside to wander forever after he has done this. The technique not only sends physical bodies to a different dimension but also intangible beings such as souls and spirits. An added fact about this particular move is that Saga can launch this at great distances, coupled with a very vivid illusion of himself wearing his armor,Saga thwarts the opponent into believing that he is in the given location performing the move, when in reality he might be miles away from the actual fighting ground.

Specter Emperor Fist (幻朧魔皇拳 Genrōmaōken?)This move directly strikes the opponents brain, the weak version can paralyse the opponent's nervous system for a few minutes, rendering him immobile and ultimately open to any attack. The more powerful version allows Saga to strike into the mind of his opponents allowing him to "brainwash" the opponent into doing his bidding and even make them go against their most precious assets. The effects of the power will only wear off if the victim complies with the brainwashed mission that Saga gave him when applying this move,in other words, if the person was sent to kill someone, that person will go back to his original self once he had committed the action of killing.

His most powerful attack is Galaxian Explosion (ギャラクシアンエクスプロージョン gyarakushian ekusupurōjon?). One of, if not the, most destructive moves in the entire Saint Seiya series, with the Athena Exclamation as the only exception. When used at maximum power, this move is said to be as powerful as the explosion of a star system or a galaxy, which is seen in the background whenever Saga uses this technique, and hence its name. Its blast can destroy intangible beings such as souls. In Saint Seiya Episode G this technique is explained indirectly stating that it resembles Leo Aiolias' Photon Burst, but actually does not leave the quasi-fatal after effects of Aiolia's photon burst or at least he seems to actually have mastered this move to a point were it does not have does after effects on him, thus leaving him able to do it once and once again.

Light Speed Punch (光速拳 kon cho ken?) He can generate multiple beams only by lifting his arm.

Gemini Kanon

Gemini Kanon (双子座のカノン Jemini no Kanon?), also known as Sea Dragon Kanon (海龍のカノン Shīdoragon no Kanon?) is directly responsible for triggering two main events : the conflict of the 12 temples by inciting Gemini Saga to succumb to his evil desires, and the resurrection of Poseidon, Emperor of the Seas. Also, Kanon is notable for redeeming himself after all his sins in the past and wreaking havoc as the Gemini Gold Saint in the army of Hades' 108 Specters.

At first, Kanon was depicted as a treacherous man, always tempting his twin brother to use his status and power to advance his status of influence beyond that of a Gold Saint. He concluded that their amazing and powerful abilities were gifts from the Gods for them to take advantage of. Much to his dismay, his brother opposed this and caused his incarceration at Cape Sounion. After his redemption, however, Kanon becomes a much centered person, much like his brother.

Kanon's abilities are equal to Saga. Just like his brother, Kanon can distort space and time with his Cosmos, create illusions, manipulate minds and use telekinetic powers. Kanon also has fully control of the 7th sense, which is what allows him to move at the speed of light. During Hades' saga, Kanon successfully achieved the 8th sense so he could travel to the underworld to fight the Specters.

Like his brother his most powerful attack is Galaxian Explosion (ギャラクシアンエクスプロージョン gyarakushian ekusupurōjon?). When used at maximum power, the power of this move is said to be as powerful as the explosion of a star system or a galaxy, which is seen in the background whenever Kanon uses this technique. When it explodes the force of this technique can destroy souls whereas they have no physical body.

Illusion Fist (幻朧拳 Genrōken?) and the more powerful Illusion Demon Emperor's Fist (幻朧魔皇拳 Genrōmaōken?) allow Kanon to strike into the mind of his opponents. He can "brainwash" the opponent into doing his bidding and even make them go against their most precious assets. The effect of this technique can be undone only if the victim sees someone die in front of his own eyes. Although the Saint Seiya Episode G shows this technique as exclusive to the Popes of the Sanctuary, Kanon states he has this power. Using this technique he can also paralyze the targets nervous system, leaving him open to an attack.

Another Dimension (アナザーディメンション Anazā Dimenshon?) and Golden Triangle (ゴールデントライアングル gōruden toraianguru?) allows his cosmo to bend the space and time itself to a different dimension, trapping his opponents inside. The technique not only sends physical bodies to a different dimension but also intangible beings such as soul. The second one holds connections with the Bermuda Triangle

Cancer Deathmask

Cancer Deathmask (蟹座のデスマスク Kyansā no Desumasuku?) was depicted as a very sadistic and malevolent man who used his power as he wanted without bending to Athena's will. Deathmask covers every inch of his temple with the faces of his fallen victims - warriors and civilian men, women and even innocent children. Deathmask is one the few Saints who knows the truth about the Pope and the Gemini Saint, along with Pisces Aphrodite, but he continues obeying his orders.

He believes that justice is not a real concept and is just a name given to the will of the stronger, since those with power can force their wills on the weak and call it fair. Even after joining sides with Athena, Deathmask remains a diabolic, sadist person, facing Aries Mu and Pegasus Seiya without showing remorse and even attempting to kill the latter. In the US version his name was changed to Mephisto. It is unknown if Deathmask is his real name or a title since he collects the faces of his victims.

As a Gold Saint, Deathmask mastered the 7th sense, hence he can move at the speed of the light. He has shown strong psychic powers, using his telekinetics abilities over a target in China when himself was in Greece. He often uses this power to levitate in the air as well, as shown in his first fight against Dragon Shiryu and when he fought the Giant Kyanos Phlox. So far, he only showed a single special technique:
Praesepe Underworld Waves (積尸気冥界波 SekiShiki Meikai Ha?): Tseih She Ke, pronounced in Japanese as Seki Shi Ki, is the Chinese name for the Beehive Cluster (also know as Praesepe). Deathmask blasts his opponent with a spiral cosmic-wave attack. As a result, his opponent's soul is sent into the Yomotsu Hirasaka, the Japanese gateway to the underworld, a dimension between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

Deathmask himself can freely travel from the living dimension to the Yomotsu Hirasaka without suffering any consequence. However, enemies sent there through the Praesepe Underworld Waves are heavily affected and their bodies loose almost all strength. Normally is impossible to someone's soul to travel back from the Yomotsu Hirasaka, but if someone conduct them from the living dimension, it is possible to follow the path back.
It is implied that, like the other Gold Saints, Deathmask reached the 8th sense at the end of the Hades's saga to be able to regain his will on the underworld and help the other Gold Saints.

Leo Aiolia

Leo Aiolia (獅子座のアイオリア Reo no Aioria?) is the first Gold Saint introduced by Masami Kurumada in his manga, along with Saga disguised as the Pope, in vol.1, although their rank was revealed until later volumes. In his first appearance, Aiolia was present during the moment Pegasus Seiya was granted the Pegasus Bronze Cloth and the status of Athena's Saint. Aiolia is shown as a reference in the Sanctuary due to his righteousness and strength. He is the young brother of Sagittarius Aiolos, considered a traitor that attempted to kill Athena when she was still a baby. Due to this, Aiolia works hard to prove his loyalty to the goddess and erase the shame his brother's actions bestwon upon them. Even during the time Aiolia thought Aiolos was a traitor, he showed immense respect toward his memory. Aiolia is impetuous and has a hot spirit that incites him to action. More than once, this create some conflicts between him and the calm Aries Mu. Through the story, it is hinted that he and Virgo Shaka are close friends. Aiolia is named after the mythical island Aiolia or Aeolia, residence of Aiolos, the god of winds.

Aiolia had mastered the 7th sense, so he is able to move at the speed of the light. It is also hinted that he achieved the 8th sense so he could awaken in Cocytos. Throughout the series, Aiolia has shown telekinetic abilities and, in the anime version, healing power through the use of his Cosmo energy.
In a fight Aiolia normally uses two techniques made of electricity. With his Lightning Bolt (ライトニングボルト Raitoningu boruto?): Aiolia blasts the opponent with a massive energy capsule and with his Lightning Plasma (ライトニングプラズマ Raitoningu Purazuma?) (Aiolia's signature technique), Aiolia generates multiple small weak plasma energy which travel at the speed of light. If he is using the maximum power of his cosmos, the technique allows Aiolia to fire 100 billion rounds of plasma per second at his opponents. From the view of his opponent, he would see himself trapped in a net formed from rays of light.

In Saint Seiya Episode G Aiolia comments that the Lightning Bolt is a stronger attack than the Lightning Plasma because the first is single hit while the second are multiple hits. Episode G also shows two new techniques that Aiolia has never used in the original series. With the Lightning Fang (ライトニングファング Raitoningu Fangu?) Aiolia sends his Cosmo energy into the ground, then it erupts as many pillars of electricity. This technique can be used to defend himself against incoming attacks, to attack his enemies or to paralyze targets.
Aiolia's strongest attack in Episode G is the Photon Burst (フォトンバースト Foton Bāsuto?). Although immensely strong, it demands a high amount of time to be prepared and leave Aiolia exhausted after used. It consists of three movements: Invoke, when Aiolia expels his Cosmo energy into the area creating many orbs of photon; Drive, when the photons are directed at his enemy, entering its body through the skin; and Burst, when the photons explode, destroying the target inside out. Since it attacks the enemy from the inside, it negates the hardness of armors.
