Virgo Shaka (乙女座のシャカ, Barugo no Shaka?) is one of the Twelve Gold Saints. As the guardian of the Temple of Virgo along the path of Sanctuary, Shaka has played a pivotal role chiefly in the battle between Athena and the Pope in the Sanctuary arc, and also in the Hades arc. He is referred to many times on the story as the "the man who is closest to god" (or closest to attain godhood) due to his immense power and is also considered the only Gold Saint that has full control over the Araya Shiki (8th sense). Shaka alone of all saints occupies the rarefied spot between God and man, but living between two worlds has its blessings as well as curses. Being the Reincarnation of Buddha* and endowed with the most powerful cosmos of all the saints even overpowering Libra Dohko's and Aries Shion's Cosmos, Shaka well deserves his reputation as the man closest to God. Even as a child in India, Shaka was precocious and communed with God himself--a scene recounted in the flashbacks moments before Shaka's death in the Twin Sala's Garden. For someone whose life has just begun, he had been unusually sensitive to sufferings and mortality of human life.

Shaka is said to be the only one of the Gold Saints that not only masters the 7th sense, (allowing him to move at the speed of light), but also the 8th sense (allowing his soul to retain its will at the underworld).
Shaka has shown enough telekinetic power to even control his enemies' weapons and to reform his body after it was obliterated by Phoenix Ikki. His mental power is also formidable, since Ikki's mental attacks were completely ineffective but were returned to the original caster. He often casts illusions to deceive his enemies. A probably illusionary technique is Transmigration (or Reincarnation) to the Six Paths (六道輪廻, Rikudō Rinne?) in which Shaka sends his opponent to one of the six Dharma's rebirth realms. These realms are, as described by Kurumada: Gakikai (the realm of the preta), Jinkai (the realm of humans), Jigokukai (the realm of hell), Chikushōkai (the realm of beasts), Shurakai (the realm of the warring demigods) and finally Tenkai (the realm of heaven). Interestingly enough, Kurumada presents the Buddhist realms of reincarnation as separate planes of existence from those found in the Hades arc of his manga, which he derived from Dante Alighieri's conception of the underworld. The Tenkai is considered the worst realm to be sent as mentioned by Shaka.
Shaka strengthens his Cosmos energy by depriving himself of his eyesight. When he opens his eyes, the stored strength is then released. Due to his enormous power, Shaka is called the "man who is closest to god".
Between his offensive techniques he can use Demon Pacifier (天魔降伏, Tenma Kōfuku?) to expand his cosmos at multiple targets or at a single one as a blast, that it was strong enough to destroy a large part of the Cancer Temple and Heaven Supremacy on evil spirits of rivers and mountains (天空覇邪魑魅魍魎, Tenkūhajachimimōryō?) in which Shaka summons minor spirits and sends them against his enemies. He can also use Hāṃ (カーン, Kān?), a defensive technique that creates a barrier that encircles Shaka's body.
Shaka's strongest attack, The Treasures of Heavens (天舞宝輪, Tenbuhōrin?), is a defensive and offensive technique. It removes the senses of its target one by one until it kills him. All five hits have been named as "Remove of the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th sense" (Dai Ikkan/Nikan/Sankan/Yonkan/Gokan Hakudatsu?). Apart from removing the five senses it can also stop the main functions of the brain that allows the body to think, also called the 6th sense. However the offensive power of this attack is so powerful that it can even destroy the cloth of the opponent.
Apart from those fighting techniques, Shaka also uses two concentration ones that belong to the Hinduism and buddhism like Om(ॐ) to maximize his Cosmo energy, allowing him to use the full extent of his power and Tenpōrin Seal (転法輪印, Tenpōrin'in?) to erase any doubts in his mind that could refrain him during the fight.

Libra Dohko (天秤座の童虎 Raibura no Dōko?, Dōko meaning "young tiger") s one of the oldest characters in the manga next to Aries Shion, as they both appear in the previous Holy War, and is most known by his role as Dragon Shiryu's mentor. He is also referred to as Old Master (老師 rōshi?) by all of the Saints of Athena as a sign of respect, even though his only true student is Shiryu. Many fans mistakenly believe it was not until the Hades arc of the manga that his true name was revealed by Shion, but Masami Kurumada had revealed it long before, as it can be found in promotional items, such as playing cards. He even revealed Dohko's young form silhouette in one of the cards. At the beginning of the Holy War in 1747 the young Dohko is promoted from a Bronze saint to the Gold saint of Libra. As he became one of the survivors of the ancient Hades War, after the war, Shion was assigned to be the pope of the Sanctuary while Dohko was assigned to guard the seal of Hades. (see Suspended animation ) Dohko on the other hand received a miraculous ability known as Misopetha-Menos, a way to preserve youth indefinitely.

As a normal person has about 100,000 heartbeats per day, Dohko has about 100,000 heartbeats per year with the help of the Misopetha-Menos. Relatively speaking, the 243 years is a mere 243 days for Dohko. This enabled Dohko to live a long life, shrunk from his normal average human size to the one of an old purple man. The condition was that Dohko must stay in the Mount Lu as a watchguard. As the time Hades will be unsealed, Dohko can be prepared to fight off Hades and his Spectres with his youthful body. This divine gift is a secret that even Shion, the former Pope, was unaware of. It is also for this reason that he is exempted from mandatory meetings in the Sanctuary.

As a Gold Saint, Dohko has mastered the 7th sense, giving him great strength and the ability to move at the speed of light. He also achieved the 8th sense so he could go to the Tartarus.

Dohko has shown some telekinetic abilities as well as telepathy. Although he only showed a few techniques during the story, it is implied that he can use all the techniques that Dragon Shiryu can (except Excalibur), since he taught him those techniques. Even so, the only techniques he has officially performed to date are:
Rozan Hyakuryu Ha : Mount Lu One Hundred Dragons Force (廬山百龍覇 Rozanhyakuryūha?): Dohko's ultimate attack. It takes the form of one hundred dragons.
Note: in the Anime-only Asgard arc, he was shown use the Shoryuha in a flashback to his youth. As the Asgard arc doesn't exist in Kurumada's manga, Dohko's appearance in it differs from Kurumada's official design.
Misopheta-menos: A gift from Athena herself. It slows down Dohko's metabolism in order to extend his life span for various generations.

Dohko's armor, the Gold Libra Cloth, contains 6 pairs of weapons to be used by the Gold Saints. Despite this, those weapons should not be used freely and it is up to the Libra Gold Saint to determine when they are needed. The weapons of Libra are 2 Swords, 2 Tong-Fas, 2 Lances, 2 Nunchakus, 2 Three-section staves and 2 Shields attached with chains.

Scorpio Milo (蠍座のミロ Sukōpion no Miro?) is the guardian of the 8th House in the Sanctuary, the Scorpio Temple. Milo is the Scorpio Gold Saint. Since his main technique inflicts immense pain to its victims, Milo always gives his opponents the option to either surrender, or become insane due to the unbearable pain. He also sees great importance in the pride of the Gold Saints and seems to be always ready to clean the name of his companions. Even so, he is a noble warrior who can admit defeat even against a weaker or inferior enemy. Since Milo fought Hyoga, he spoke to Aquarius Camus in a way that led the fans to believe they were close friends. Apparently, this was made official since the anime adaptation of the Hades arc of the manga included more interaction between them and they are depicted as friends in Saint Seiya Episode G.
Milo is first seen at the Scorpio Temple, where he confronted Pegasus Seiya and Dragon Shiryu. The two Bronze Saints were no match for Milo's power. First they were set back by his Restriction, and later injured by his Scarlet Needle. When both of them had lost the will to fight, Cygnus Hyoga, along with an unconscious Andromeda Shun, arrived at the Scorpio House where he challenged the Gold Saint.
In the manga, however, Hyoga came before Seiya and Shiryu could start to fight.

Milo attacked Hyoga with his Restriction technique, although it had no effect in the Cygnus Saint because Hyoga's body was being protected by ice. After his first attact was ineffective, Milo started to use his Scarlet Needle on Hyoga. Hyoga could do nothing against Milo's speed, and after almost all his attacts failed to injure the Gold Saint, a nearly senseless Hyoga awakened his seventh sense and launched an Aurora Thunder Attack on Milo. At the same time Milo attacked Hyoga with the last Scarlet Needle, Antares. Both fighters clashed in the middle of the House, but Hyoga dropped to the floor after he received Antares.
Looking down at Hyoga, Milo saw that he was trying to crawl to the next House. After seeing this, the Gold Saint realized that Hyoga's attack had frozen his Gold Cloth in the 15 places where the stars of Scorpio are located. Following this, Milo recognized that Hyoga had hit him just as he received Antares, and if he had not been wearing his Gold Cloth, he would probably have died first. Milo as a true Saint admitted his defeat, and after he stopped Hyoga's bleeding he allowed him to go to the next House. After the battle in the 12 Houses ended, to atone himself, Milo used his own blood to repair the Cygnus bronze cloth.

Milo had mastered the 7th sense, so he is able to move freely at the speed of light. It is also implied that he reached the 8th sense to wake up in Cocytos. His fighting style seems to rely upon quick movements. His secret techniques are
Restriction (リストリクション risutorikushon?): Milo uses his Cosmo energy to stop the movements of his opponents. According to Shiryu and Seiya, the person caught by this technique sense a strong fear like they were about to get stinged by the scorpion.
Scarlet Needle (スカーレットニードル sukāreto nīdoru?): Milo launches a crimson needle to 14 parts of the body to poison opponents, makes them bleed, and scream in pain, losing their 5 senses in the process, the attack is impossible to be diverted or defended. Each needle represents one of the stars of the Scorpio constellation. He can shoot how many needles he wants at the same time up to 14 and even in multiple targets. The holes of the needles draw a miniature of the Scorpio constellation on the body of the victim. The final attack of the Scarlet Needle and the main point of Scorpio is Antares (アンタレス antaresu?). If the rival has not yet been defeated after 14 Scarlet Needles, Milo uses Antares. Whoever receives 14 Scarlet Needles and Antares will die. However if the Antares is not delivered, the victim might survive and gradually recover over a period of a few days given the massive blood loss. It is hinted that the Antares is a close range technique, so Milo delivers it directly on the victim's body instead of launching it like the other Scarlet Needles.

Sagittarius Aioros (射手座のアイオロス Sajitariasu no Aiorosu?) is one of the 12 Guardians of Sanctuary, with the Sagittarius as his destined constellation. Aioros is the famous gold saint who died protecting Athena when she was an infant. Aioros always was a paradigm of righteousness, seen as the perfect Saint and one of the two Gold Saints who could succeed Aries Shion as the next Pope of Sanctuary and the chosen one. Not much is known about Aioros, since he died before the main story began. More of him is seen in Saint Seiya Episode G, like his relationship with Garan, a servant of his young brother, Leo Aiolia, who once trained with Aioros for the Sagittarius cloth. Despite his condition, Aioros managed to help the main characters many times sending his cloth to aid them. Aioros is probably named after the Greek god of Wind, Aeolus.

Although Aioros' moves were not shown in the original manga, there are nevertheless two techniques that were attributed to him in other mediums: one in the anime adaptation, and another in Episode G. They are:
Atomic Thunderbolt ( atomikku sandāboruto?): Aioros shoots a massive amount of energy balls with some electric charge. This attack is from the anime, and was revealed during a flashback fight against Capricorn Shura.
Infinity Break ( infiniti bureiku?): This technique allows Aioros to shoot an infinite number of light darts that pierce anything upon contact. With this attack, Aioros destroyed Horus' army in Saint Seiya: Episode G.

Aioros' cloth, Sagittarius Cloth, is armed with a bow and a golden arrow. This arrow is often depicted as the main weapon of the series and gives the final blow in four of the five movies of the series when is used by Pegasus Seiya. It was hinted on the original series and confirmed in Saint Seiya Episode G that the golden arrow can concentrate the Cosmos of those surrounding it if they wish.

Capricorn Shura (山羊座のシュラ Kapurikōn no Shura?) belongs to the fabled rank of Gold Saint hierarchy among the other 12 Gold Saints. His guardian star is of the zodiac sign of Capricorn. Shura is the Gold Saint that underwent some modifications in his ideology when the manga was adapted to animation. While the anime series shows Shura as being the most loyal Saint to Athena, Kurumada depicted in his manga a Capricorn Saint that at first was somewhat reluctant, but short moments before his death, rediscovered his loyalty to Athena, and remained faithful to her even after his death. According to the manga, Shura, just like Cancer Deathmask and Pisces Aphrodite, knew that Gemini Saga was behind the Pope's mask but he still was obeying his orders. As he says in his fight against Shiryu, he doesn't believe anyone fights for a god anymore, so he doesn't care about fighting for Athena. He considered that those with power, were automatically qualified to be judged just. He thought that the Pope, even being evil, using that power, could use it for some good.

Shura relies on his ability to quickly deal damage in his enemies using his Excalibur attack combined to his speed of light, achieved with the 7th sense. He houses the power of the holy sword in both his arms and legs, thus being capable of use them as they were extremely sharp blades. Excalibur is regarder as the most powerful weapon of the entire series: in the non-canonical Saint Seiya Lost Canvas the previous incarnation of Shura, Capricorn El Cid, was capable of cleaving in four halves the arrow of the Sagittarius Cloth and cutting in half Genbu Gregor, a Spectre whose Surplice was as hard as diamond. His secret techniques are:
Excalibur (聖剣 ekusukaribā?): In the anime, it was said that in mythical times, Athena granted the legendary sword Excalibur only to a Saint who proved his undying loyalty towards the goddess. This technique is a very sharp blast, composed of extreme cosmo concentration released by his arms and legs movements. Since it is quickly released, it can be used multiple times.
Double Excalibur (ダブルエクスカリバー daburu ekusukaribā?): This technique was only used in Saint Seiya Episode G. It consists in the use of the Excalibur with his left arm in addition to the right arm, simulating a two-swords fighting style.
Jumping Stone (ジャンピングストーン janpingu sutōn?): When Shura is thrown by the impact of some attack, he grabs his enemy with his legs and flips both of them, so he will be released of the attack and the enemy will be thrown by his own attack.

It is hinted Shura achieved the 8th sense to be able to help the other Gold Saints in the Wailing wall. In Saint Seiya Episode G, he also was able to reach Dunamis, the power of the gods, to cut Galaxy Creios' holy armor using the Double Excalibur.

Aquarius Camus (水瓶座のカミュ Akueriasu no Kamyu?) is a Gold Saint, guardian of the temple of Aquarius, and also Cygnus Hyoga and Kraken Isaac's master in manga. In the anime, he was the master of the Crystal Saint, who was Hyoga and Isaac's master. Camus is a cold looking Saint, since he believes the Gold Saint, as the strongest among Athena's guards, should never show exasperation or it would draw the people into despair. In the manga, he reveals that he actually knew that the Pope wasn't working under Athena's will, but he still kept working under his orders to fulfill his role as que Aquarius Gold Saint. Even so, he was glad to see his pupil fighting for the real Athena. Since Milo fought Hyoga, he made some quotes about Camus that led the fans to believe they were close friends. Apparently, this was made official since the animation of the Hades saga included more interaction between them and they are depicted as friends in Saint Seiya Episode G.

Camus, unlike the other Gold Saints, specialized his Cosmo energy not in create power by the movement of atoms, but by stopping the same movement. Due to this, his power consists not in destroying the matter, but in freezing it. Among those warriors who use this kind of ability, Camus is considered the stronger since he is the one who can lower more the movements, creating a lower temperature. Even so, and having mastered the 7th sense, Camus is not able to achieve the lowest possible temperature: the Absolute Zero. In the Hades Arc it seems Camus awakes the 8th sense as he is able to enter the Underworld. His techniques are:
Diamond Dust (ダイヤモンドダスト daiyamondo dasuto?): A basic technique using the freezing Cosmo energy to shot a blast of freezing energy.
Kol'tso (Russian for ring) (カリツォー karitsō?): Although Hyoga used this attack sometimes in the original series, it was never said Camus also possessed it until he used in Saint Seiya Episode G. It creates rings of icy wind that encycles the body of the target stopping its movements.
Freezing Coffin (フリージングコフィン furījingu kofin?): This is a technique used to lock a body inside a block of ice, but since it has a slow realization it probably is not effective against moving targets. Although he commented not even the combined strength of all 12 Gold Saints could break this, Griffin Minos destroyed it with a punch when used as a wall by Cygnus Hyoga. Even so, when someone is locked inside it, the only way to get out is creating a temperature lower than that of the coffin.
Aurora Execution (オーロラエクスキューション ōrora ekusukyūshon?): Camus's most famous and strongest technique, it claimed to be the technique that best uses the freezing power of its user.

Pisces Aphrodite (魚座のアフロディーテ Pisukesu no Afurodīte?) is the last of the Gold Saints. Aphrodite was a Saint famous not only because of his incredible, mesmerizing beauty, but also for his reputation as one of the strongest among the 88 Saints. It is notable that despite his incomparable beauty, Aphrodite is not narcissistic. He is often described as cruel as his fellow Gold Saint, Cancer Deathmask, but not as sadistic. Aphrodite is depicted as a man who believes the power is the only way to keep the order and assure the justice. Suscribing to this theory, he believes the stronger is allowed to rule over the weak. He is also ironic and sarcastic. According to Saga, despite his beauty, Aphrodite is the most feared of all the 88 Saints of Athena. His reputation echoed again in the still non-canonical Saint Seiya Episode G, when Aphrodite appeared in front of the Titan's soldiers who were awe-struck due to his beauty but also paralyzed by fear in his presence.

A recurring motif in the Pisces Saint is that he considers victory as the greatest beauty of all and, therefore, he believes what makes him really beautiful would not be his physique, but absolute power.

Having mastered the 7th sense, Aphrodite is fully capable of using the plenty of his Cosmo energy. This allows him to move and attack at the speed of light. As every Saint, he also possess some degree of psychic power that allows him to use abilities like telekinesis and telepathy (both implied, since he was never showed using any of those). At the end of the Hades' arc, it is hinted that Aphrodite was able to use the 8th sense as well, allowing his soul to move freely on the underworld without being subject to its laws.

In the non-canonical sidestory Saint Seiya Lost Canvas, it is revealed that the Pisces Saint is immune to poisons due to the fact they live close to the garden of royal demon roses after the Pisces Temple. It is also revealed that the immense beauty of the Pisces Saints have an important function: it mesmerizes the enemies during battle.

Even so, Aphrodite's main power remains on his ability to manipulate his Cosmo energy in order to create different kinds of roses that he can freely brandish. Using this ability, he can perform the following techniques:
Royal Demon Rose (ロイヤルデモンローズ roiyaru demon rōzu?): Aphrodite uses red roses as a projectile. When struck by the thorns on the roses or smelling their fragrance, the target would be poisoned until they slowly lost their 5 senses and fell into a sweet aroma of death. The red roses can also create a dense red mist to cover the entire place and hide his position.
Piranian Rose (ピラニアンローズ piranian rōzu?): Aphrodite uses black roses as a projectile. Upon impact, they can break anything within their reach. The power of this technique is high enough to reduce to dust a Bronze Cloth recently strengthened by Aries Mu.
Bloody Rose (ブラッディローズ buraddi rōzu?): Aphrodite uses one or more white roses as a projectile. It strikes at the opponent's chest, and drains all blood from their heart. As the white rose draws blood, it eventually becomes red. This is Aphrodite's strongest attack. A single rose is enough to kill a giant of many feet of height in few seconds. Apparently, the rose seeks the heart of the enemy, so is not possible to avoid it. The only way to escape from this attack is to destroy the rose itself or try to shield oneself from it, albeit the rose showed enough penetrating power to break even a Gold Cloth.

In Saint Seiya Episode G, Aphrodite is able to create and manipulate large rose's vines. So far, he used them to refrain and strangle his targets, create massive vine blades and to create defensive cocoons to protect and heal his or another person's body (through his Cosmo energy).

1. Waktu saya masih duduk di bangku TK, saya pernah menghajar seorang teman saya yg kebetulan anak bengal yg sok ngebos dan suka menggangu teman yg lain. Padahal anak itu badannya jauh lebih tinggi dan besar dari saya, yaa tapi berhubung saat itu saya sudah tidak bisa menahan diri lagi jadi aja kelepasan hehehe..
2. Kali ini waktu SD, saya pernah menipu teman saya pada saat dia mau bermain ke rumah saya, saya tunjukan arah jalan yg salah dan mengarah ke area pembuangan limbah rumah tangga, namun sayangnya ketahuan karena memang udaranya sudah berbau tidak sedap.
3. Masih waktu SD, saat habis olahraga dan kehausan, saya dan teman2 pernah mempunyai kebiasaan yg tidak patut ditiru kalau masih hidup Indonesia, kebiasaan itu adalah meminum air ledeng secara langsung seperti layaknya di negara2 maju misalnya Jepang.
4. Beranjak SMP, saya pernah melubangi kaca jendela dengan cara memukul penghapus papan tulis dengan kayu, seperti seorang pemain baseball, alhasil kaca itu berlubang. Namun tidak ketahuan sampai sekarang hahahahaha..
5. Waktu saya SMA, saya pernah tidak sengaja menendang botol minuman yg kosong dan mengenai kepala salah seorang guru saya. Seketika saya sembunyi, namun setelah beberapa detik kemudian saya mengakui perbuatan saya dan meminta maaf hufff..
6. Ketika saya lulus SMA dan mengikuti salah satu tempat bimbingan belajar, saya dan teman saya pernah terkunci di satu mall, ketika itu waktu memang sudah malam namun kami malah duduk2 santai, dan pada saat mau pulang ternyata sudah dikunci. Sedikit panik karena taku tidak bisa keluar atau dianggap maling (hehehe) saya lari ke area basement dan untungnya masih dibuka, legaaaaaaaaa..
7. Masih hari yg sama, pada saat mau pulang ke tempat kost saya, lagi2 menemukan hal menyebalkan, yaitu pintu gerbang tempat kost saya sudah digembok, karena ada peraturan apabila lebih dari jam 10 malam pintu akan digembok. Saya pun berpikir sejenak, akhirnya diputuskan untuk meloncati pagar tersebut walaupun pagar itu cukup tinggi juga dan ujungnya tajam. Setelah melihat keadaan sekeling dan sudah dipastikan sepi, saya pun meloncati pagar tersebut untuk melihat apakah pintu dalam terkunci atau tidak, ternyata pintu itu tidak terkunci dan akhirnya kami pun bisa masuk dengan mengendap2 hahahaha..
8. Pada saat kuliah, kami (satu angkatan) pernah membuat dosen kami kesal dan nangis, karena beliau datang telat jd kami tinggalkan, begitu kami pergi dosen itu datang dan melihat kelas yg kosong. Ya dapat dibayangkan bagaimana kesal dan sedihnya dosen itu, tp kami juga kesal karena lama harus disuruh menunggu ^_^
9. Ketika saya mengikuti acara gladi resik wisuda, kebanyakan dari kami (termasuk saya) malah buat acara sendiri dengan ngobrol sana sini, yg pada akhirnya acara gladi resik tersebut harus diulang karena kami dinilai tidak tertib hahaha..
10. Dan yg terakhir pada saat ini saya mempunyai teman gila yg memberikan saya tugas ini, kenapa hal ini gokil, karena dengan saya berteman dengan dia, saya jadi banyak ketularan hal2 anarkis hahahaha peace bro...

Mario (マリオ?) is a fictional character created by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Serving as Nintendo's mascot, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Though originally only appearing in platform games, starting with Donkey Kong, currently Mario appears in many genres of games, such as racing, puzzle, role-playing, fighting, and sports games, and many others. As Nintendo's mascot, Mario is one of the most famous characters in video game history, and his image has become synonymous with video games. Mario debuted in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981. In Donkey Kong Junior in 1982, he was the villain, and in the ending cinematic, he is knocked out. The games were so successful that he carried over into an arcade game titled Mario Bros. in 1983, which boasted a simultaneous two-player mode and introduced his taller yet younger brother Luigi. His next appearance was in Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which would quickly be one of the most famous games on the console.

Mario is portrayed in games and other media as being a kind-hearted and brave hero with archetypically heroic aspects, with a love of pasta and pizza. Mario's cheerful personality is reflected in his high pitched voice. Mario's speech is usually limited to short phrases like: "Okey dokey!", "Woohoo!", "Let's a-go!", "It's-a me! Mario!", "'ere we go", "Mama mia!" and more, though in the Mario sports titles, however, he uses full speech capabilities. However, besides these short phrases, Mario hardly ever makes any conversation in any official games, leaving the talking to other characters. He does however speak fully in the DiC animated cartoons and the anime series.

During the development of Donkey Kong, Mario was known as "Jumpman". Jumping—both to access places and as an offensive move—is a common gameplay element in Mario games, especially the Super Mario Bros. series.

Mario's most commonly portrayed form of attack is jumping to stomp on the heads of enemies, first used in Mario Bros.. This jump-stomp move may entirely crush smaller enemies on the stage, and usually deals damage to larger ones, sometimes also causing secondary effects. This attack often enables Mario to knock the turtle-like Koopa Troopas into their shells, which can slide into and damage other enemies or Mario.

Subsequent games have elaborated on Mario's jumping-related abilities. Super Mario World added the ability to spin-jump, which allows Mario to break blocks beneath him. Later, the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong allows Mario to jump higher with consecutive jumps, and perform a back-flip. In Super Mario 64, Mario has several jumping abilities, such as a sideways somersault, a ground pound, and the "Wall Kick", which propels him upwards by kicking off walls.

Mario uses many items, which give him various powers. The most prominent of these is the "Super Mushroom", which allows Mario to grow to twice his size, becoming the eponymous "Super Mario", and can sustain damage before shrinking back down to "regular" Mario. Additionally, collecting a "Fire Flower" transforms Mario into "Fire Mario" and allows him to throw fireballs at enemies, and a "Starman" renders Mario temporarily impervious to harm.

Luigi (ルイージ Ruīji?) is usually portrayed as the younger brother of Nintendo's official mascot, Mario. Luigi first appeared in the arcade game Mario Bros., where he was featured as a main character alongside Mario. Since his debut, Luigi has appeared in many games in the Mario series, most often accompanying Mario as a central protagonist, but has also starred as the main character in Mario Is Missing! and Luigi's Mansion. While Luigi was originally created as a character identical to Mario except for being colored green instead of red, his rise in prominence in the Mario series lead to the adoption of a personality and style of his own. He is normally depicted as cowardly, but when he does get the courage to step up, he can be tough and overcome his fears.

Although Luigi is a plumber, like his brother, other facets of his personality vary from game to game. In the Mario & Luigi series he is often portrayed as reluctant, cowardly and timid, whereas the Paper Mario series makes him a more laid-back, but still somewhat cowardly, personality who tends to embellish his own accomplishments and abilities in the hopes of sharing some of Mario's fame. He also tends to be more willing to help with Mario's quest, but does not get the opportunity to do so until Super Paper Mario. In Luigi's Mansion, he was still depicted as cowardly but manages to face his fears to save his captured brother.

In most of his video game appearances, Luigi's abilities are either identical to those of Mario or with slight variations. Since Super Mario Bros., Luigi and Mario have made extensive use of items to extend their abilities, such as the Super Mushroom, which allows the player's character to grow larger, the Fire Flower, which allows him to throw fireballs (in recent games, Luigi launches green fireballs), and the Starman, which grants Mario or Luigi temporary invulnerability.

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (originally released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2), Luigi is distinguished as being a better jumper than Mario, but has lower traction, making the character more difficult to control. In Super Mario Bros. 2 (later released in Japan as Super Mario USA), Luigi is again the best jumper, although he is not as fast as Mario. The traction characteristic also appears in Super Mario 64 DS, where Luigi can run across a small amount of water with a running start using this power. However, he has a lower speed than Mario and is less agile than the other characters and, unlike Mario, cannot perform a wall-kick.

In Super Mario Galaxy, Luigi runs faster and jumps higher than Mario, but yet again has lesser traction.
